A historic new chapter for Stampa
After more than six happy and memorable years in our iconic Herengracht building, we’re excited to announce our move to another historic space – this time in Oostenburg, one of Amsterdam’s most dynamic, emerging neighbourhoods.
During Amsterdam’s golden age, Oostenburg was a hive of maritime activity. Long ropewalks, some stretching nearly 500 metres toward the IJ, produced the heavy, twisted ropes that powered the ships carrying Dutch trade across the world.
One of the most fascinating stories connected to this neighbourhood involves Czar Peter the Great of Russia. In 1697, he spent several months in Amsterdam studying shipbuilding firsthand. A commemorative plaque on the building still marks his apprenticeship today, and the neighbouring Czaar Peterstraat stands as a lasting reminder of his time here.
The site also has a significant industrial history, particularly through the operations of Stork, a renowned Dutch machine-building company. In 1954, Stork merged with Werkspoor, influencing the industrial landscape of Oostenburg by producing diesel engines and heavy machinery. The area witnessed various transformations over the decades, including the establishment of the Werkspoormuseum next door, which documents this fascinating industrial heritage.
Today, Oostenburg offers a mix of industrial heritage and modern architecture. The neighborhood is being transformed into a sustainable living-working island that preserves iconic industrial relics like the Werkspoorhal while shaping a lively, nearly car-free environment for a growing community of residents and businesses.
We’re thrilled to start our own historic new chapter and build new memories and relationships with our clients at Oostenburgergracht 77. Pop in for a chat and a cup of coffee!
